It Was About D&D the Whole Time!

The Summer of Hanks continues! Following Bosom Buddies  Hanks guest-starred in an episode of Happy Days, and an episode of Taxi before the made for TV movie Mazes and Monsters . Happy Days- "A Little Case of Revenge"-  In this episode, Hanks plays a former classmate of The Fonz who has been holding a grudge against him since being bullied in elementary school. This episode is pretty indicative of Hanks' early style of humor. Calm, calm, calm. OUTBURST! Hanks is also at his funniest with physical comedy. In the climactic confrontation, Hanks runs around kicking, hitting, jumping, and making absolutely ridiculous "karate" sounds all of which induces smiling and laughter. Taxi- "The Road Not Taken Part 1" . I was unable to find this entire episode so I had to watch just the scenes with Hanks on Youtube. The episode seems to be focusing on a flashback to Christopher Lloyd's character in college. Hanks plays a college friend tripping on Mary J...

Bosom Buddies Season 2

The ruse is revealed in the first episode out of the gate, at least to Sonny and Isabelle and through the magic of plot nothing really changes. This allows the show to become much more the buddy comedy originally envisioned by the show creators and I'm not sure if the show is better for it. Given they were cancelled after only 2 seasons its possible the execs at ABC weren't exactly happy with the changes either. According to the wikipedia article the show was hampered by a writer's strike in 1980 and the constant time slot changes by ABC.   The general plot remains the same though some details change. Instead of working for an ad firm Kip, Henry, Amy and Ruth end up becoming partners in a commercial production venture. Isabelle becomes the new manager at the Susan B. Anthony hotel with the departure of Lucille Benson (Lilly Sinclair). Kip is in constant pursuit of Sonny with various amounts of success. Amy is in constant pursuit of Henry and various hijinks take place ar...

Bosom Buddies Season 1

Bosom Buddies  Season 1 is in the books. The idea for this blog came from my buddy Robby saying I should document my thoughts as I embark on this Tom Hanks filmography project. Most of what I write here will be more like thoughts I had during an episode or movie not exactly a fully curated review. Tracking down a TV show from 1980 proved to be a bit of a challenge. I have Hulu, Netflix, AmazonPrime and HBO. Bosom Buddies  was not available on any of those platforms. I managed to find 3 episodes on Youtube that were not blocked for copyright infringement. By episode 4 I was shut down so I turned to Amazon. I found a set on Amazon for 18 bucks, but I felt like maybe that was a bit high for a 40 year old show and a 13 year old DVD. I found one on Ebay that I felt good about. I was winning the bid for 5 days at 5 bucks, but in the end it went for 20 dollars. I found another seller and began negotiating with him but he wanted 25. I messaged him when he rejected my offer that his ...

Post the First 6/6/2020

I've long held Tom Hanks to be one of, if not my favorite actor of all time.  It occurred to me recently there is a lot of his work I haven't (or don't remember having) viewed. Thus I have set out on a grand project this summer (2020) to review the entirety of the Tom Hanks-Actor filmography as credited by IMDB.  https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000158/#actor To start us off, his appearance in He Knows When You're Alone.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGdYiqt2XQ0 This movie clearly wants us to buy Hanks as the college boy toy for an older woman. It's an odd choice to me; I've never thought Hanks was that sought after for his looks. The psych 101 bullshit is delivered serviceably. I don't really have much else to say about this 4 minutes of screen time. I'm glad someone saw enough to be convinced to give him more chances in the future. Next up Bosom Buddies Season 1. I know he guest starred on The Love Boat because the network wanted to preview him to au...
